7 Facts That Will Make You Rethink Mosquitoes
After Houston was plagued with quarter-sized mosquitoes in September, many residents were shocked by the sheer volume. If your backyard and home were swarmed and invaded by mosquitoes, here’s what you need to know.
Fact #1: It is only the female mosquitoes that draw blood
Females require blood in order to produce their eggs. Using protein, she then completes the development of her eggs, depositing up to 200 in total. In comparison, male mosquitoes feed on flower nectar and have no interest in your blood.
Fact #2: Some people smell “bad” to mosquitoes
If you are wondering why you are bitten far more often than others, it may be because of the chemicals you produce. It is estimated that 20 percent of people are considered to be high attractor types, which is due to a combination of variables, including isolated compounds found in the odors produced by your skin.
Fact #3: The color of your clothes can also make a difference
Believe it or not, mosquitoes are highly visual, particularly in the late afternoon. They are also attracted to dark colors, so if you are wearing black, navy blue, or even dark red clothing, you will stand out to hungry skeeters. So, wear light colors while spending time outdoors and opt for loose-fitting clothing if possible.
Fact #4: Mosquitoes prefer pregnant women
Unfortunately, researchers have found that pregnant women are twice as attractive to malaria-carrying mosquitoes than non-pregnant women. This is due to higher body temperatures, as well as an increased volume of carbon dioxide in exhaled breath.
Fact #5: Beer drinkers are especially attractive
If you are a beer drinker and spend a lot of time outdoors, you may be the perfect target. One study found that a single 12-ounce beer can make all the difference. However, researchers are not entirely sure why this is, as the ethanol content in sweat and skin temperature did not show any correlation. They concluded that beer drinkers should be cautious regarding their increased risk of mosquito-borne diseases.
Fact #6: Even some blood types are more appetizing than others
One key study found that if your blood type is O, you are likely the most attractive to mosquitoes. In fact, the percentage of mosquitoes landing on blood group O secretors was 83.3 percent, compared to 46.5 percent for A secretors. Blood type B fell somewhere in the middle.
